Blue Ridge Retreat

This 4,500 SF home is located in northwestern South Carolina on a south-facing slope overlooking a valley and mountains beyond.  Sustainability and a comfortable integration to the site through materials were both important to the client.  The house is oriented to take advantage of sunlight and prevailing winds.  The large south facing elevation maximizes winter heat gain and the extended eaves on the roof shade the glazing in the summer to prevent overheating.  The rustic materials were chosen to help blend the house with the site.  They include tongue and groove cedar siding, a board formed concrete foundation, a heavy timber frame and a standing seam zinc roof.  During the design and construction documentation phases of the project I detailed wall sections, building sections and elevations.
