The Skeleton Bed

With the help of my amazing wife, Marina, I built this bed during summer 2013, just after finishing Studio 804.  During my time in Studio 804, I learned how to weld and I became comfortable with and fascinated by steel fabrication.  I find a raw beauty in steel and when combined with wood, it can make for an interesting play of hard and soft materials.

The bed is constructed with 1-1/2” square steel tube and 5/8” birch plywood.  It is comprised of 4 individual components:  one headboard, one footboard and two side rails.  Each component is welded together, but they all bolt to one another, so that the bed can be easily disassembled for transport.  Small steel tube stand-offs create a separation of 5/8″ between the plywood skin and bed frame.
